The Trinidad and Tobago Judo Promotion Project (August 11-29, 2023)

The Trinidad and Tobago Judo Promotion project is to help Judo become more a part of the lives of the people in T&T and possibly the Anglophone Caribbean. We believe that as a nation we can benefit from Judo as the unique activity that forges discipline, builds character (grit) and changes deviant behaviour to calmer, more thoughtful responses to volatile interpersonal conflicts.
Our plan is to institutionalize Judo in T&T as it is today in the Spanish and French speaking Caribbean islands, starting with the T&T Police Service (TTPS). Judo can help our police execute arrests effectively, quickly, and safely, similar to how Judo is used in police departments all over the world. Judo can also enhance community policing by reducing the levels of mistrust and anger that exist between the police and communities, through smarter conflict resolution, a reduction of police violence and excessive use of force, better community relations, and healthier officers, both physically and mentally.
To accomplish this, we are partnering with the largest and most prominent Judo organisation in the world, the International Judo Federation (IJF), the world’s governing body for Judo to bring to Trinidad the expertise of Mr. Johannes DAXBACHER, head of the police section of the IJF’s Military and Police Commission in late 2019, and his wife Regina.
The first phase of the project is the visit to Trinidad from the experts at the IJF Military and Police Commission from August 11 to 29, 2023, to carry out training for the trainers in the fields of Judo, law enforcement, education, and sport. The two experts will also convene workshops with these same groups so that there is a better understanding of how Judo training and its values can be utilized to benefit everyone with maximum value, not just for Judoka, but for all sports and people from all walks of life.
The second phase is the actual teaching of Judo at the TTPS. This will be done in two parts, (1) teaching recruits at the Police Academy for the duration of their training (5-6 months) where they will receive basic Judo training up to the level of Yellow Belt or 5th Kyu, and (2) continuous access to Judo training for those who have already received basic training.
