QPJC Fight For Peace Judo Program and Community Outreach
On Saturday 16th, the QPJC held an interactive judo display at the Covigne Road basketball court in Diego Martin. This was part of a mobilization exercise for the Fight For Peace (Judo) program in that community. The event preceded the start of judo classes next week Tuesday at the Covigne Road Intervention and Outreach Centre.
It was a quite satisfying activity as kids on the basketball court joined us to learn a few throws and pins. After some initial skepticism (What?! I not doing dat!!!) they got into it and had great fun with the basics, throwing, being thrown and grappling. QPJC members Trevor Haynes, Christopher George, Vishnu Ramdial and SJC's Gabriella Wood came out for the display and gave fantastic support. Chris, in particular, was great with the kids and was in his element - judo, which gave him the opportunity to express his other passion - talking! It was a success because although participation was relatively small (about 8 kids) passers-by (about 150) saw what was going on while I handed out quite a bit of fliers. The response from the 20 people in the community that I was able to speak with was positive so let's see how it goes over the next 6 months, the duration of the program.
A big "thank you" to those that took part in the display, to Khaliqa for designing the flier and to Vishnu and Nigel for all the other behind the scenes work. Great job, guys! The main part of the work starts next week Tuesday 19th at both locations - Covigne Road and Diego Martin Central Secondary.
