Schools Judo League 2017 - 2018 Season
Holy Name Convent wins Schools Judo League
Holy Name Convent Port of Spain is the champion of schools judo in Trinidad and Tobago. This title is given to the school that amasses the most points from judo competitions held during the school year, 2017/2018. In addition to the overall schools title, Holy Name also topped the Secondary Schools Division for which they will receive an award of TT$5,000 from Judo TT, the national governing body for judoin Trinidad and Tobago. Fatima College and Maria Regina Grade School were also in winner’s row and each will receive $5,000 from Judo TT.
There were 3 divisions in which schools competed, and winners were:
• Secondary Schools, Girls - Holy Name Convent (628.5 points)
• Secondary Schools, Boys - Fatima College (574 points)
• Primary Schools - Maria Regina Grade School (427.5 points)
Contests got underway on 16th September 2017, and from that day until the last day of competition on 9th June 2018 students gave it their all to ensure that their school could emerge champion school and hold the coveted Ian Thrush Challenge Trophy
Judo in schools has been a regular feature of after-school programs since 1996. This received a boost in 2005 when judo was included as an elective in Physical Education at the CXC, now CSEC. Now, judo after school programs are officially recognized by Judo TT in 11 schools, including 3 primary schools and 8 secondary schools - Maria Regina, Dunross Prep, Holistic Prep., Pleasantville Secondary, Holy Name Convent, Bishop Anstey High School, St Joseph’s Convent POS, FatimaCollege, St Mary’s College, Diego Martin Central and Queen’s Royal College. The goal of Judo TT is to spread judo nationally, especially in schools, and the SJL would be a means to help grow the sport.
